It’s National Poetry Month and thus I am taking a brief hiatus from my study posts. I’ll be celebrating poetry all this month and will share new poems for my regular Monday posts but will also spotlight a few of my favorites throughout the month. I am continuing my study of darkness and plan to return to Isaiah 45:7 in May.

Until then, I hope you enjoy.

Prayer in Dark Times
To them who love the Lord
I dedicate this prayer
May we turn our eyes to Jesus
Show our neighbors that we care
May we show them love unfailing
Unconditional but not compliant
May we show God's grace unending
That on Him we're all reliant
Let us have mercy for our fellow man
Instead of condemnation
Let us leave our judgments with the Lord
Let us see their desperation
May we be a light in darkness
For we know the One they seek
And when they turn and ask us
May it be His words we speak
May we be Jesus personified
To everyone we see
And in this present darkness
May you say these words to me

Interlude
I went out walking
Late at night
The moonlight
Was so bright
My shadow walked beside me.
I needed time for thinking
And I sought
A good spot
But I could not
Make out the stars above me.
Too many lights glowing
Mankind's tries
To lighten skies
Blinding my eyes
To the beauty I might see.
It set me wondering
Of thoughts enshrined
By a Darkened Mind
In attempt to find
An image of who we might be.

If You're a sun burning
Living Fire
We can desire
But would expire
If we dared to approach You;
Are we the moon hanging
High overhead
Utterly dead
Our light instead
One that is endued?
Or are we stars shining
Containers of light
Pinpricks in the night
Scattered but bright
Each with our own hue?

I see the day dawning
No more night
To our sight
You the light
The only one we can see.
A glimmer of understanding
What is true
Us made anew
An image of You
Our light born in unity.

Haste this Day's coming
With all restored
In one accord
And You adored
O, Great Father of lights!

Perambulation

I wonder as I wander
Seeking no specific place
There are many things to ponder
I want the sun upon my face
As I head hither and yonder
I find I'm still in Spirit Space
And I wonder as I wander
How You'll help me run this race

I wander as I wonder
Why I didn't have a clue
This duress I have been under
Had nothing at all to do with You
With my misperceptions rent asunder
I can clearly see what's true
Those things that we call wonders
Are things only You can do

Be still and know that I Am God
The words have come through loud and clear
I find the commandment rather odd
Because I know You're more than near
You are with me in this body
Which is Holy Spirit dwelling sphere
But I'll be still and know my God
And wonder where we'll go from here

No longer do I wander
I'm guided by each word You say
Stillness is not time I squander
Because You teach me how to pray
My desire's not to maunder
From this path I will not stray
No longer do I wander
When I'm walking in The Way

Remembrance

I spoke-at once the words were gone
I formed and said them without thought
I wished that they could be withdrawn
I had not behaved as I ought
My words had not been trustworthy
I looked at myself in disgust
O Holy One who maketh me
Please remember I am dust
Can something still be called a lie
If it is one merely implied?
My feelings say it can and I
Desperately want to run and hide
From the sight of The One who saw it all
And how much I've come up short
O Holy One-don't let me fall
Remind me You are my support
I anticipate some punishment
Or some penance I must do
So I come with my head bent
And find nothing there but You
Your arms are tight about me
You strengthen me to start anew
O Holy One how can it be
I am so loved by You?
Most High Lord of all creation
You give Your blessings day by day
There is no guilt or condemnation
You wash all my sins away
With You I can face all I must
Because Your Spirit lives in me
O Holy One faithful and just
In You I now live righteously!

Seasons

You speak to me and bring forth Life
The hidden seed is quickening
My barren ground is thus transformed
As I burst forth in wondrous Spring

Summer comes with sudden storms
And brings intensifying heat
Both are necessary for
Without them fruit would not be sweet

Then comes the harvest time
The ripened fruit-it satisfies
Though what is reaped is bountiful
I anticipate darkening skies

My world turns dark and cold and gray
Impossible to bring forth fruit
But though it looks blanketed in death
Nothing quenches the Life in the Root

Seasons change-I know it’s time
I wait for fruit with burgeoning pride
But instead here comes the Husbandman
Branches are pruned and cast aside

My Father God, in You I trust
I cling to You through all this pain
I know You prune to increase fruit
Not one of these seasons are in vain

Bring me to that glorious day
When pruned and purged and purified
All I am images You
And You alone are glorified
